Glasgow has long had a history of being a working mans city with a tough drinking tradition. The city's drinking culture is the main reason why the simple Glasgow pub out numbers the Glasgow restaurant by almost 3 to 1, but in the recent past we have seen a dramatic change in these numbers. That's partly due to the smoking ban and increased competition from supermarkets but its also down to the fact that many traditional pubs are starting to re-invent themselves to appeal to a wider clientele - and that's often being done by turning them into family friendly eateries. Its been possible to order good pub food in most establishments but in recent years the choice of cuisine has reached the standard of many dedicated top class restaurants. On example of where this is happening is the Grill On The Corner in Bothwell Street in the heart of the city. With a menu ranging from ostrich to curry, you soon get the idea that this former drinking establishment is making a big effort to attract a wide range of customers from busy professionals wanting a quick bite to eat through to foodies out to sample the culinary delights of the city. There really is something to tickle every palate on the menu. A nice touch is the inclusion of a live band on some nights and dancing all the time - if you can prise yourself out of your chair. Its certainly true to say that we have along way to go before restaurants take over as the most popular form of entertainment establishment in the city but the landscape is certainly changing. These new kinds of mixed entertainment establishments such as The Grill On The Corner are proving to be surprisingly popular, particularly among the younger, trendier crowd who are now looking for a bit more in the way of entertainment on a night out. It is always being stated that we need to move away from our hard drinking culture and that we need to adopt a more European approach to how we seek our entertainment. If this is the case then the shift towards these kind of mixed entertainment establishments can surely be a good thing, although it may, ultimately spell the end of the Glasgow pub scene.
